Hand crafted sourdoughs and traditional breads

Real bread for friends and neighbours

It all started when I took a few loaves to my local pub. People liked them, so I made a few more and in a few short years a hobby turned into a new career.

Today, Tensheds Bakehouse is still the most micro bakery you could possibly imagine.  It’s just me in a shed in my garden.  I make every loaf, and every time someone buys a loaf, I’m the person they buy it from.  Real, nutritious bread for my community, made with local flour and no unnecessary additives.

Enjoy!

Where to find our bread

Farmers’ Markets

You can find our bread at Bures Market on the second Saturday of the month, from 10am until 1pm, and at Sudbury Farmers’ Market, which is held on the last Friday of each month from 9:30 until 2:30.

Bread at The Bell

On the third Wednesday of the month (sometimes the second Wednesday)you can visit our pop-up shop at The Bell Inn, Castle Hedingham between 5:30 and 7pm.  And as the pub will be open you could even enjoy a swift half in the evening sunshine.

Just make sure that you keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages for details of what we are baking.  Or sign up to our WhatsApp Community to make sure you don’t forget to place your order.

Our bread

We specialise in baking sourdough breads and rely on time, temperature and really good ingredients to produce naturally leavened bread that tastes – well, just like really good bread should taste.

We use no artificial preservatives, flavourings or enhancers and our white, wholemeal and rye sourdoughs are made of flour, water and salt, and nothing more.  As natural and healthy a product as we can possibly make.

Can I keep the bread in my freezer?

All our bread is baked fresh and can be frozen.

So what is so special about sourdough?

Every time I bake a loaf of sourdough and see it blooming in the oven I have to pinch myself, because I've done nothing other than mix together some flour and water and added a bit of salt. OK some of the flour and water has been sitting in a pot for a number of...

Bread from our wood-fired oven

We have built a wood-fired oven which burns logs from trees in our garden. The slightly smokey taste of bread baked in this way is quite remarkable. Pizzas are pretty amazing too. Keep your eyes on our Facebook page if you would like to try a loaf or two.

Where does your flour come from?

We get our flour from Marriages in Chelmsford. Most of our sourdoughs are baked with Chelmer White, which is produced from locally grown wheat. You can find out more about Marriages by visiting www.flour.co.uk.

Why are you called the Tensheds Bakehouse

Because we bake at home and we have ten sheds.
